HydroWave therapy is a more advanced, non-invasive treatment that uses shockwaves to rapidly accelerate the body’s natural healing process by triggering regenerative cells. HydroWave achieves this by sending a short, rapid burst of highly focused electromagnetic energy into the soft tissue that is either injured, scarred, inflamed, or causing different types of pain.
We started offering HydroWave therapy at Northern Lakes Chiropractic because we were seeing so many patients that had non-spine soft tissue injuries, and when they went to their medical doctors the only options put on the table were drugs or injections. This did not sit well with our practice, and we decided to find a better solution. Our mission was to find something that would give patients real results that would last, and not just another cover-up that only would make the problem worse over time. We have found that with HydroWave therapy, results have been amazing, helping the body repair at a rapid rate without the need for surgery or injections. This therapy works great with chiropractic because chiropractors focus on the osseous part of the joint (bone). We can use this therapy to help with damage around the joint that needs additional help healing, which is where HydroWave is so highly effective in super-charging the healing and offering a quick, non-invasive, effective treatment that is long lasting — one of the reasons it’s become a core part of care here at Northern Lakes Chiropractic.

How Does HydroWave Therapy Work in Duluth, MN?
Physical Effect
The physical effect happens by using a gentle pressure wave that stimulates the tissue at a deep level. The physical force stimulates blood flow, breaks down scar tissue, and advances the move of lymphatic drainage. These effects lead into a reduction of swelling, decrease inflammation, increase circulation, and improvement of elasticity of the tissue. All of this leads to faster recovery and better overall function.
Chemical Effect
At a chemical level, HydroWave helps promote healing by stimulating:
Collagen — increase in collagen production helps support skin, muscles, and ligaments because it is the main protein in supporting those structures.
Growth factors — increase in growth factors increases repair at a cellular level and helps promote production of new healthy tissues.
Reduction of inflammatory markers — decreases in inflammatory markers help support an increase in healing and decrease overall pain/discomfort.
Biological Effect
HydroWave shockwave therapy triggers a cascade of healing response at a cellular level. The therapy triggers the activity of fibroblast and osteoblast cells responsible for healing and regeneration of connective tissue and osseous formations (bone). It turns into a reduction of scar tissue formation, faster repair of the tissue, and increase in joint mobility. During treatment, natural endorphins get released, which give you more instant pain release because endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers. HydroWave is focused on healing from the inside and providing a real solution that is grounded on results.

What to Expect: The HydroWave Treatment Process
What happens during the procedure?
1. When you visit Northern Lakes Chiropractic, we will learn what brings you in and determine if it is something that HydroWave therapy is worth pursuing.
2. We will do objective testing like joint restriction testing, range of motion analysis, and potentially X-rays to get a diagnosis and understand your baseline.
3. We will perform your first HydroWave treatment to see exactly how your body responds to HydroWave therapy.
4. Seeing how your body responds to treatment, we can determine what type of treatment will be needed based on the first treatment. We do it this way because we want to make sure HydroWave will be effective for your case before going over any plans of action for HydroWave therapy. In rare cases, if HydroWave treatment is not deemed effective after the first treatment, then we will not continue to pursue any additional treatment.
What should a patient expect after treatment?
The normal healing response after our body has been injured is inflammation, because HydroWave is triggering your healing response. You can see soreness, slight pain, increase or different types of sensation, and potential swelling after treatment. These are all normal responses after treatment.
How is HydroWave different from traditional shockwave therapy?
Not all shockwave therapy is the same. There are 4 main types of shockwave therapy: radial shockwave, electrohydraulic, piezoelectric, and electromagnetic (like HydroWave). The type of shockwave makes a large difference in the types of results that can be seen. A good way to think about shockwave therapy is like buying a car. A $20,000 car and a $200,000 car can both be called cars, and they may both have 4 wheels and can get you from point A to point B, but what they can do is very different.
HydroWave uses focused electromagnetic shockwave technology. Instead of spreading most of the energy near the surface, focused shockwaves are able to deliver energy deeper into a more targeted area of tissue. This allows the treatment to be used at different intensity levels depending on the area being treated and the patient’s needs.
HydroWave creates focused acoustic shockwaves that travel into the targeted tissue. These pressure waves are designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing response and can help improve blood flow, mobility, and range of motion. Some patients may even notice a change in pain or movement immediately following treatment.
The treatment also encourages angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels, which can support circulation and tissue repair. It may help stimulate cellular activity, growth factors, and other processes involved in regeneration and recovery.
By supporting circulation, tissue healing, and elasticity while helping calm inflammation, HydroWave can be a valuable tool for helping damaged or irritated tissues recover and function better.
